Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't my species listed?

A full hierarchical species list exists which, at the moment of writing, matches the Duff 2012 checklist. Only preferred names are used, no synonyms. You can check a species is in the list by trying to go to the website page with path taxon/genus-species where you replace genus-species with the binomial you think is missing, separating genus and species by a hyphen. If you get a page not found then the name you have entered is not in the list This could be a mistake with the website, in which case use the website feedback to report the error, or your spelling.

If the name is in the checklist then the taxon page will list nodes tagged with the name. There should be a node of type species. If it is missing then it needs to be created. Editors can do this by going to Content > Add Content > Species.

If the species node exists, follow the link to it. Each species can be tagged with the schemes that record it. If a species is tagged, the scheme will appear in the Record block and it will appear in the species list for that scheme. If a species is not correctly tagged with its scheme it will be missing from the schemes species list. Editors can edit the species and correct this.

Why hasn't the photo I added appeared in the gallery?

First of all, make sure you have clicked on the Photo Gallery menu item as this rebuilds the list of images to display. Next, naturally, you need to be sure you have clicked on the family which the system believes the species to be in. It is possible you are not in agreement! Finally, a corresponding species node needs to exist before an image of that species can be shown.

To check all this, visit the page with path taxon/genus-species where you replace genus-species with the binomial that you chose to tag the image with. A list of nodes tagged with this name will appear which will include your image. If your image is not in the list you either did not tag it correctly or did not save it correctly. To investigate that, click on Content in the admin menu to see a list of nodes and your newly added image should be near the top.

Assuming your image was listed on the taxon page then there should have been a species node too. If not it needs to be created. Editors can do this by going to Content > Add Content > Species. If you view the species node it will show the taxonomic hierarchy, confirming the class the species is in.
