Editing a page is much like using a word processor. You type in a space with a toolbar of buttons above which you can use to apply bold or italic styles, create lists add links and insert images.
Basics
- You must be logged in before you can make changes to the website.
- Goto Content > Add content in the Admin menu (the black bar at the top of the screen).
- Select the type of page you wish to create. Choose either Page to add to the general section of the website or Page - Scheme to add to a subsection dedicated to a scheme. You have to choose the correct type in order to ensure the page appears at the correct url, in the correct menu and with the correct style.
- In the form that appears there are only three things that you need to complete.
- Title. This will be the heading for the page. It will also be used to create the url. The title should clearly reflect the page content as it influences search engine behaviour. It is plain text - you cannot use italics here.
- Body. This is the space where you write what you have to say. To make the website pleasing to view we need to be consistent in the way pages are presented. For this reason options are limited and some style guidelines are offerd below.
- Menu settings. To make the page appear in the menu, check the box to provide a menu link. You then have to provide the menu link title, that is the words that will appear in the menu. You will want this to be short so it is quick to use. Menus can be structured in a hierarchy so you can select a parent item and the thing called weight determines the position of the item in the menu. Don't worry too much about this as there is a much easier way to do this. See How to structure a menu.
- Always click the Save button after making changes.
Complications
Adding a link
- Select the text that you want to serve as a link. (See note below on style).
- Hit the link buttton (which looks like a link of chain.
- Complete the information in the dialog box. You can link to internal pages, external pages or even to anchors within your page.
- URL. Enter the path to the page. The easiest thing to do is copy and paste this from the navigation bar of a browser showing the page you want to link to.
- You can usually ignore all the other options.
Adding an image
There are quite a few steps to doing this but that is because you have to tell the website quite a few things to get the right image in the right place. It is logical but can be confusing at first.
Typically we want to put images of a uniform size alongside text to illustrate it. If you want an enlargement it can be arranged so that clicking on the image opens a bigger version.
- Images will be placed in the flow of the document so first place the cursor at the start of the paragraph that you want the image to align with.
- Hit the Image button in the toolbar which looks like a little tree/landscape picture.
- In the dialog box that appears, there are two fields to complete and the others should be left blank.
- Image URL. This is the path to the image on the server. It is just possible you will know this but probably you will want to use the button at the right of the field to bring up a file browser. This allows you to look through the folders on the server and find the image you want to insert. There are folders for each recording scheme and one called coleoptera for the overall site.Simply select the file you want and hit the Insert file button. See below if the file you want is not yet on the server.
- Image description. The description is important as it is read by screen readers to people with a visual impairment.
- Having completed the dialog, hit the Insert button.
- The image will now have appeared at the position where the cursor had been. To position it and add a caption, select the picture and then hit the Caption toolbar button that looks like a square with some lines of text around it.
- In the dialog box that opens, enter a caption and select Right from the Float drop down list.
- When you click Insert, the image will move to the right, the text will flow around it and the caption will appear beneath.
The above assumes that the image you want is already on the server but, if it is a new image, it has to be uploaded first. To do that you have to do the following things having opened the file browser in 3.1 above.
- Hit the upload button in the browser toolbar.
- In the window that opens, hit the Choose File button. Yet another dialog box opens, this time allowing you to pick a file from your own computer system that you want to use.
- With your file chosen, select to create a "thumbnail" called inline. Not so much a thumbnail really, this resizes your image to a standard size so that there is a consistent look across the website.
- Click the upload button below the thumbnail checkbox. This puts the file on the server. Use the X in the top right of the Upload box to close it and continue as above.
Note that image uploads are currently limited to 10MB. That still allows you to upload a high resolution image. Images are currently scaled down to 2048x1536 if they are larger.
