COCKERELL, Theodore Dru Alison

Well known American entomologist who did vast amounts of systematic work in many orders of animals, and also in plants and fossils. Born in Norwood, South London. Educated at various private schools and at the Middlesex Hospital, before moving to Jamaica, where he was curator of the Museum 1891-1893, and then to America. There are references to beetles in his entomological work although this was mainly confined to the Coccidae and to Hymenoptera. Beetles are among the many insects he gave to the British Museum between 1886 and his death. Gilbert,P. (1977) lists nineteen obituaries, etc.. (MD 3/02)
