Born at Caithness and studied at the University of Glasgow where he obtained M.B. and C.M. in 1881, and M.D.in 1887. Moved to Los Angeles in 1889 where he practised as a physician before being appointed to Professorships of Dermatology at the University of Southern California and at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He lived for some time at Clifton, Alaska. Davidson is recorded to have been ‘one of the early naturalists of Southern California and Alaska being particularly interested in botany and entomology’ (Agassiz (1931) p.600).
