Best known as a Lepidopterist; for his work on parasitic Hymenoptera much of which was carried out in collaboration with J.B.Bridgman; and for the number of obituaries which he wrote of his fellow entomologists. His publications also included one or two notes on Coleoptera including ‘Granary weevils Sitophilus granarius and S.oryzae’, (Ent., 12, 1879, pp.41-50 and 298, and ‘The Blue Beetlein Essex’, (ibid., 17, 1884, p.212).
