Born in Scotland and emigrated to New South Wales in 1839. Member of the Legislative Assembly there from 1854-1874. Knighted in 1889. In 1874 he carried out a scientific expedition to New Guinea chiefly at his own expense. Much of his entomological work in Australia was based on Coleoptera on which he published many papers. Founder and first President of the Entomological Society of New South Wales and of the Linnean Society of New South Wales. There are twelve obituary and other notices in Gilbert (1977) p.240.
