Born in Essex but emigrated to New Zealand in the 1950s with her husband and children. Joined the Plant Diseases Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Auckland in 1956 where she became a dedicated speleologist, surveying and mapping large areas of limestone caves and discovering new cave beetles. Her particular interest was in weevils especially their biology and immature stages and upon which she became a world authority. 28 of her published papers were on this group the most important being a systematic overview which appeared as volume 28 of the Fauna of New Zealand series in 1993, and a paper dealing with the immature stages in Zimmerman, E.C. Australian Weevils, 2, pp.365-726. There is a photograph and obituary by G.Kuschel in Curculio, 43, December 1998, pp.14-15, from which the above is taken. (MD 2/04)
