Description

Size: 4-4.5mm
Basic colour: Head black, pronotum normally uniformally bright red-brown. Elytra black with basal third, suture and margins red brown.
Pronotoum: Transverse, sides strongly rounded and hind angles indistinct; foveae almost impunctate.
Leg colour: Brown.
Confusion species: Acupalpus flavicollis

Status: Only known from Thames estuary, last recorded in 1952

Description

Size: 2.5-2.8mm
Basic colour: Pale to mid-reddish brown.
Pattern colour: Pronotum paler than head and much of the elytra.
Pronotoum: Widest well in front of the middle. Sides almost straight behind this, hind angles rounded but distinct; foveae almost impunctate.
Leg colour: Yellow or pale brown.
Confusion species: Acupalpus exiguus

Biology

Status: Widespreadand often abundant in southern Britain. Often coastal in Wales and Ireland.
Habitat: Litter, moss and tussocks near fresh water.
Other notes: Head narrower than pronotum. Elytra rather convex, dilated apically so they are widest in apical third. Third interval with dorsal puncture.

Status: Scarce. Local in southern England.
Habitat: Moss and litter near water, usually near the coast.

Description

Pronotoum: Widest in front of middle, sides behind this almost straight and converging to sharp rectangular hind angles. Hind margin concave, foveae double, linear and unpunctured.
Leg colour: Black.

Biology

Status: Abundant. Widespread in Britain, except in north-east Scotland and in Ireland.
Habitat: Woods and damp, well vegetated moorlands.
Other notes: Elytral shoulders stongly toothed, with eight fully developed strong striae, intervals slightly convex. Third intervals slightly convex, third interval without dorsal punctures, seventh interval raised into a sharp keel anteriorly and apically. Wings absent.
