Status: Common and widespread.
Habitat: Almost any except high altitude moorland
Host plant: Various Polygonaceae and Chenopodiaceae; also lesser periwinkle Vinca minor, yew Taxus buccata and birches Betula spp.
Overwintering: As adults, some survive to hibernate a second time.
Food: Adults on leaves of non-woody hosts and sometimes pollen (e.g. of chamomile Chamaemelum nobile); larvae on roots of hosts, forming fine galleries.
Other notes: Can damage sugar beet crops. Take care to separate from C. picipes.
