Born in Edinburgh but spent his early childhood in India before returning to attend George Watson’s College. After a period of National Service he went to Edinburgh University where he studied zoology gaining a Ph.D in 1963. He was a Fulbright Scholar in 1964 and remained at the University as a lecturer until taking semi-retirement to run a small farm at Wester Duncanstone in North Aberdeenshire in 1990.
