BRITTEN Junior, Harry

Son of Harry (see below). Born in Hunsonby, Cumberland and died at Ledbury, Herefordshire. Also lived in Surrey, and at Whitby where he was a nurseryman. . Johnson (2009) records that his interest in Coleoptera was largely restricted to his earlier days in Whitby (1933-38), and that there is a photograph of him as an active Dipterist in the NHM. He published four notes on the Coleoptera of Whitby and District in The Naturalist, 1934-1938, one of which was written jointly with W.J.Fordham.

BRIGHTWELL, Thomas

Listed as a subscriber to Denny (1825). Lived at Surrey Street, Norwich. Mentioned by Stephens (1828, 11) 'about ten years back it [Cicindela germanica] was observed by Mr Brightwell in abundance running amongst the grass at Blackgang Chine in the Isle of Wight'. Records of accessions by the local Society, in Norwich Castle Museum, state that Brightwell gave foreign Coleoptera in 1848 and 1850 (including a specimen from Brazil). FLS. (MD 12/01)

BREWER, James Alexander

Listed in Ent.Ann., 1860, at Holmesdale House, Reigate, and as being interested in British Coleoptera. He published 'Corticaria truncatella and Ceuthorhynchus biguttatus taken at Worthing' in Trans.Ent.Soc.Lond., (3)2, Proc. 81, 1865; 'Coleoptera new for the Reigate district' in Proceedings Holmesdale Natural History Club, 1865-66, 8, and 1866-67, 33-34, 41; and 'Homalota saundersi Rye captured on Reigate Heath', ibid., 1866-67, 35.

BRAUER, Richard

A doctor. Listed in Naturalists Directory, 1904-5, as interested in Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera and marine zoology. At this time he lived at St. John's Road, Knutsford, Cheshire. In the 1906-7 edition of this periodical his name does not occur.

There is a collection of some 484 specimens of exotic Rhyncophora in Bolton Museum, collected by Bauer in 1905(?), which was purchased from A. Ford for £2-10s (Accession no. 128.05). A collection of exotic Lepidoptera collected by Bauer was sold by Stevens on 14 November 1905. (MD 12/01)
