Description

Size: 1.1-1.5mm
Basic colour: Dark shining bronze or green-bronze, sometimes almost blackish
Pattern colour: None, though punctures on elytra less coarse than in L. obliteratus.
Number of spots: None
Pronotoum: As basic colour, sometimes with a coppery tinge.
Leg colour: As basic colour, hind femora dark reddish-brown
Confusion species: Longitarsus obliteratus

SW Palaearctic.

Biology

Status: Very local on coasts of Wales and SW England. First described in 1973 and some specimens subsequently found to have been confused with L. obliteratus in collections.
Habitat: Sea cliffs, limestone grassland and sandy beaches (not coastal in continental Europe)
Host plant: Breckland thyme, Thymus serpyllum.
Overwintering: Probably as eggs, larvae and adults (i.e. in two generations).
Food: Adults on leaves, larvae at roots.

Description

Size: 2-3mm
Basic colour: Yellowish to orange or brown
Pattern colour: Elytral suture may be darkened. Some specimens may be a darker brown with a broadly darkened suture and possibly outer edges of elytra.

Pronotoum: Usually as basic colour - in forms with a broadly darkened elytral suture, may also be darkened.
Leg colour: As basic colour, hind femora darkened

Palaearctic, including the Middle East, North Africa and Cape Verde.

Biology

Status: Widely scattered and very local; not recorded from Scotland, old records only from Wales and Ireland. Scarce (Notable A)
Habitat: Calcareous grassland, unimproved grassland, maritime cliffs.
Host plant: Various Scrophulaceae i.e. figworts and mulleins.
Overwintering: As adults
Food: Adults on leaves, larvae probably at roots.
Other notes: Adults parasitised by a braconid wasp larva (probably Perilitus sp.) and an unidentified nematode.

Status: Widespread but uncommon in England & S. Wales. Scarce (Notable B), appearing to have declined long-term in eastern England in particular.
Habitat: Woodland clearings and calcareous grassland, chalky hedgerows, sand, shingle, and possibly river banks.
Host plant: various Boraginaceae, especially vipe'rs-bugloss (Echium vulgare) and hound's-tongue (Cynoglossum officinale)
Overwintering: As adults
Food: Boraginaceae: adults on leaves, larvae probably at roots
